Banker Guitars was born out of a love for vintage guitars, and old school American Craftsmanship.  They say that there is a scientific explanation for everything- I disagree.  When it comes to guitars, there is a certain element of magic, passion, and artistry that goes into creating a guitar that becomes an extension of you.  This is not a CNC shop, everything that I create is done using the methods employed during the advent of the electric guitar, completely with hand tools and power tools.  All of my necks are carved by hand, with a rasp and spokeshave.  I select the finest tone woods available, from rare, old growth sinker Belizean Mahogany to fine grade American Swamp Ash.

My obsession with tone is only bested by my obsession with classic design and looks.  I am inspired by a number of things, old muscle cars, classic architecture, the natural beauty of Mother Nature, and Rock n' Roll.  I do not intend to reinvent the wheel or advance innovation, the best guitars you will ever play already exist.  My goal is simply to capture the magic of those great guitars, while imparting my own vision and design to create an affordable instrument that will make any player proud.

Order a Guitar

Custom guitars are my specialty.  I offer a few standard models that are able to be customized to your desired specifications.  I offer a number of different finish, pickup configuration, hardware, and color options for accessories.  The beauty and artistry of a custom guitar is something that I have a deep appreciation for, and I like to think that my experience and style go a long way towards creating a truly handsome instrument.

I have been told by people that the process of having a guitar built for you was more exciting than having a child.  I can't speak to the accuracy or appropriateness of that, however I do know that it is pretty fun.  I provide pictures and updates all along the way, you get to see it go from raw lumber to finished masterpiece. If you would like to get my feedback on a particular combination that you are thinking of, or have a special request of any sort please contact me! I try to get back to inquiries as quickly as I can, and I am glad to give you an opinion or suggestion on how something will ultimately look or perform  While a lot of folks may have certain opinions or ideas of what they want, I really like to learn about you as a player so I can create something that will best suit your needs and taste.

ORDERING:  For a custom build, please allow 5-6 months for your guitar to be completed. I try to give an accurate lead time when your order is placed, but given that I am a one man shop that does everything in house, and also have a full time career and marriage to maintain, please be patient with me during the process.  I promise you, the finished product is worth the wait.  If you build and order a guitar through this site, I will contact you via email to schedule a discussion and final order confirmation, after which I will send you an invoice for a NON-REFUNDABLE 50% deposit.  Final payment, (including $100 shipping charge if guitar is being shipped) is due upon completion.

Brent Hinds

As one of the founding members and lead guitarist of Mastodon, Brent Hinds needs no introduction.  The Grammy nominated titans of progressive rock and metal have toured the world over and continue to unleash their unique style of melodic hard rock on their dedicated group of fans.  Relentless creativity and a desire to work outside the boundaries of tradition requires an instrument that is tailor made to suit those needs, and a luthier with a mind that is open to venturing beyond those boundaries of tradition.  Hinds plays a signature Redtail “Hammer Axe” Edition, that was designed in partnership with owner and head craftsman of Banker, Matt Hughes.   The Hammer Axe features a custom single humbucker setup that is split three ways on a vintage CRL blade switch, Mastery Tremolo, and push button signal kill switch.  You can see and hear this guitar on tour with Mastodon today!
